You may have noticed that events in parliament and government regarding the Brexit process are turning out somewhat bizarre these days, and have done so for many, many months. As Martha Kearney put it at 08.10 on the Today programme on BBC radio 4 on Wednesday 23 October 2019:
“Once again the future’s as clear as mud, but then we are in Brexitland”
This comment speaks volumes about the state of our politics and media today. Not just on the issue of Brexit, but across the board.
Psychologically and intellectually, we are imbibing a particular point of view in our politics and our media as objective truth. It parades itself as objective; it regards itself as objective; it presumes upon a monopoly of both the truth and morality; it acts to all the world as if it is sanity and orthodoxy, and it expects us all to adopt its own estimation of itself as truly orthodox and correct. Only a blithering idiot would object.
Well this blithering idiot objects, and this blithering idiot can demonstrate that the objection stands the ultimate test: the truth.
Have you spotted, yet, the problem with Kearney’s statement ? Once you do, you may begin to realise why it is so revealing of all that is wrong with our media and politics today, and has been for many, many years.
The clue is in the throw away, explanatory part of the statement [do listen to the original on BBC Sounds], in the words
but then we are in Brexitland
This says it all – about the abuse of facts arising from predisposition and from prejudice; about the distortion of facts – a distortion now so routinely applied that it is normal to them. About the prevalence of a mindset and worldview in our media and politics around whose perspective and terms all debate is obliged to take place.
The abuse is revealed by one simple FACT.
We are not in Brexitland.
Brexitland remains a destination yet to be reached. It has not happened, and if the Martha Kearneys and Nick Robinsons of this world get their way, it won’t.
No, the true state of play and the proper description for where we are is this:
rEUmaniacland – the place where Remainiacs hold sway and impede the Brexit agenda
We did not exit the EU on March 29th 2019 despite 100+ assurances from Theresa May because she wrote two letters requesting two extensions to the 2 year Article 50 period; whereupon the EU duly imposed their own timetable.
The 6 month extension handed down by the EU was ostensibly given for the UK to act decisively about Brexit and resolve it by October 31st, eg by holding another Referendum and/or a General Election. Neither happened despite there being ample time for both.
The reason is simple fact. The Remain Parliament refused.
Instead, the Remain minded parliament has deliberately kept a minority government in being, refusing a General Election in order to prevent the occurrence of a so-called NO Deal Brexit on October 31st.
This period of our politics since we were supposed to have left on March 29th almost 6 months ago cannot be characterised as Brexitland. Why ? Because it simply does not represent the actual state of affairs.
But it can be characterised as rEUmaniacland because that does reflect the state of affairs.
Not only has the Remain obsessed parliament prevented government operating as normal [eg by seizing control of the Order Paper and by the Speaker allowing other devices as well], but the Supreme court has flagrantly added to the Remain campaign agenda too.
The decision by the Supreme court on 24th September 2019 against the Prerogative Power on Prorogation was revolutionary and unconstitutional. It had no basis in our 3 centuries old constitutional monarchy arrangements. It’s basis was entirely in the worldview and terms of the European Court of Justice which dictates the interpretation of the EU Treaties to all members states and to the EU’s Institutions.
The name of that court is yet another symptom of this modern disease distorting concepts and language. It is not a court of Justice at all; it is a Political Court with a Political Purpose and functions in the best traditions of Technocracy and Ideology.
This very aristocratic and technocratic mindset permeates all the upper echelons of our civil service, politics, media and even commerce.
Which brings us back to Martha Kearney’s comment.
Use of the term Brexitland reveals Martha Kearney’s prejudice and predisposition. It reveals her as a propagandist – witting or unwitting – for the Remain at all costs campaign.
In the propaganda strategy of the post June 23rd 2016 Remain campaign, Brexit is to be characterised in wholly negative terms, and everything is to be done to delay, and thereby ultimately stop Brexit.
The fundamental psychology of the Remainiac is that Brexit is a tragic mistake – ie they measure it in their own world terms, not according to any objective standard or any democratic decision. It is assessed against their own belief.
In their perspective, they must explain Brexit voters as
- simple dupes of the evil Brexiteers – they have been misled and must be helped to see the error of their ways
- evil nationalists, racial bigots, warmongers; haters of anyone or anything they don’t like or that is different
- silly old people looking to a past which is dead and gone
This being their belief, they can justify themselves in ignoring and overturning the June 23rd 2016 Brexit Referendum result.
Having a sense of educational superiority, they slip all too easily into contempt for Brexit and Brexit voters – both Kearney and co-host Robinson went to Oxford.
Brexit being the problem then, Brexit is the reason for our present problems – the facts notwithstanding.
This psychological given is reflected in what they think and say. Brexit has caused this mess. Stop Brexit – clear up the mess. Simple.
But Brexit has not happened, because Brexit is manifestly frustrated by Remainiacs.
We are not in Brexitland.
We are in rEUmainiacland – a place where the Cult of Europa must rule – and democracy must bow the knee.
